Convicted felon charged with several felonies

By Roger Lanse

On Thursday, July 18, at about 1:05 a.m., Silver City police officers were dispatched to 226 S. Corbin Street in reference to a domestic dispute. The male caller stated that a male named ‘Dominic’ was holding a handgun and hitting a named female and had pointed the weapon at the caller.

According to a statement of probable cause, when officers arrived at the location at about 1:08 a.m., they had contact with caller and the female and observed a vehicle driving away for which officers were able to determine the registered owner. The female victim advised officers she was visiting with caller when her boyfriend, Dominic Duran, showed up and began beating her up and displaying a handgun. She said Duran pushed her to the ground several times, slapped her face and broke her prescription glasses. The altercation, according to the female victim, took place both inside and outside caller’s RV.

Officers were able to review surveillance video given to them by caller, the statement said. The video showed Duran pushing the female to the ground and hitting her, and slamming her up against the vehicle, multiple times with his left hand, while holding the handgun in his right hand. During this time, the victim is continuously crying and pleading for him to stop, the statement said.

The video, according to the statement, also shows Duran next following the caller, after caller exits the RV, and yelling and pointing the handgun at him.

A short time later, the statement said, a Grant County Sheriff’s deputy initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle seen leaving earlier from the scene and advised that a male left the vehicle and took off running and deputies were unable to place him into custody.

The female victim then followed SCPD officers to their station to find her a safe place to stay.

A little later, dispatch advised the SCPD sergeant that Duran had just called and pinging his phone it pinged to the area of 807 15th Street, where he resides, according to the statement. In talking with Duran, the statement stated, Duran advised officers he was highly upset when he found out the female victim left their infant son alone while she went to be with caller, so he took the baby to his mother’s in Bayard.

Nearby residences were evacuated. and EMS was staged in the Domino’s parking lot. Deputies and officers surrounded the house and multiple commands were made to Duran to come out of the residence. Duran was not forthcoming.

At this point, the statement said, A SWAT team from New Mexico State Police arrived and took over the scene. At 1:30 p.m., state police advised they had negative contact with anyone in the apartment. SCPD and NMSP did a sweep of the surrounding area but had negative contact.

SCPD Chief Freddie Portillo told the Beat the morning of Monday, July 22, that Duran is on the loose and law enforcement agencies are attempting to locate him.

According to an arrest warrant, Duran is being charged with one count each of: aggravated assault, aggravated assault against a household member, possession of a firearm by a felon, and false imprisonment, fourth degree felonies; and battery against a household member and criminal damage to property, misdemeanors.
