WASHINGTON - Today, U.S. Senator Tom Udall released the following statement after the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) reported that the Senate GOP's TrumpCare bill would leave 22 million more Americans without health care in the next 10 years:

"Yet again, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office has confirmed that TrumpCare would be utterly devastating for New Mexico and the nation. This mean and heartless bill would take away health care from hundreds of thousands of working families in New Mexico and 22 million Americans, partly by raiding Medicaid, just to pay for a massive tax cut for the rich.

"Today's CBO score underscores just how disastrous TrumpCare would be in New Mexico and across the country. TrumpCare would cause people in every corner of New Mexico and the nation to lose the ability to see a doctor when they're sick, and lose access to life-saving prescription drugs, mental health and drug addiction counseling, and other critical health services. TrumpCare would impose an age tax on seniors already living on a budget, and it would be especially dangerous for women, families struggling to make ends meet, people with pre-existing conditions, and New Mexicans in rural areas. The cuts to Medicaid are particularly devastating for New Mexico's economy. The Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, has helped keep rural hospitals open and boosted health care to one of the only growing job sectors in the state. TrumpCare would put rural hospitals at risk of closing and would kill health care jobs, and New Mexico simply can't afford the deep cuts TrumpCare would make.

"The staggering numbers in today's CBO score are more than just statistics. They each paint a stark picture of what TrumpCare would mean for New Mexicans and Americans - for people like Elena from Albuquerque, who was able to have a potentially life-saving surgery thanks to the Medicaid expansion in the Affordable Care Act. Elena is one of the 10,000 people who have called, written letters and sent emails to me about TrumpCare - 96 percent of whom have been opposed to this dangerous bill. I'm going to keep fighting to defeat TrumpCare, for people like Elena who stand to lose the most. I urge my Senate Republican colleagues to abandon this dangerous bill, and instead come together to protect and improve health care for every New Mexican and every American."
