Chaves County, NM - On October 22, 2018 at around 6:30 a.m. the New Mexico State Police investigated a fatal crash on US Highway 285 at about mile post 90 south of Roswell.

The initial investigation indicates a 2000 Nissan, driven by Alejandro Chavez (34) of Roswell was travelling south at a high rate of speed behind a south bound 2003 Peterbilt (CMV). For unknown reasons, the Nissan rear ended the south bound CMV. Chavez sustained fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Office of the Medical Investigator.

Driver inattention appears to be a contributing factor in the crash. Alcohol does not appear to be involved and seatbelts were not properly used. The driver of the CMV was uninjured. There were no other vehicles involved in the crash. The name of the CMV driver will not be released by State Police.

This crash remains under investigation and no further information is currently available.
