Silver Consolidated Schools Superintendent William Hawkins, was the featured speaker as introduced by Lt. Gov. Howie Morales speaking from Santa Fe, who said he was waiting to hear what Mr. Hawkins would say. "His accomplishment at Silver Schools is awesome. Wherever I go, he's there not just as a superintendent, but as a parent, an educator, and as a citizen. I'm saying this as a parent, as an educator. He's out cutting weeds at Fox Field. He shows his respect and his commitment to the schools."
Hawkins said he was humbled by that introduction. He introduced as a guest at the luncheon the Assistant Superintendent Luis Alvarez.
Silver City Ranger District lifts area closures for prescribed fires

Jaybird and Mill prescribed fire closure areas reopened Wednesday
SILVER CITY, NM, October 25, 2023 – The Gila National Forest, Silver City Ranger District lifted two area closures that had been put in effect during the Jaybird and Mill prescribed fires.
"These two prescribed fire projects helped remove dead and down woody material and understory brush that help feed crown fires," said Silver City District Ranger Elizabeth Toney. "While the area closures for these two prescribed fire units have been lifted, please be careful when entering any recently burned area."

The town of Bayard held a work session and regular meeting October 10, 2023. Attendance included Mayor Chon Fierro, councilors Eloy Medina, Frances Gonzales, Eloy Gonzales, and Jose Diaz. The work session allows the council time to ask questions about items on the agenda and discuss them. Gabriel Ramos, city clerk, also attended.
The council had questions about the accounts payable and what some of the charges had been for. Ramos explained all of them. The consent agenda had an approval for David Palomarez to attend continuing education conference. Ramos said he needed it to finish the required credits for his water certification. He only had 24 more hours. It will be a weeklong course in Las Cruces and will cost approximately $2,000 that includes the class and cost of the trip.
Cobre, Silver, FMI and WNMU working together on tech school

The Cobre Consolidated School Board held a meeting on October 9, 2023. Board members in attendance included Serena Murillo, Gabriella Begay, Gilbert Guadiana, and David Terrazas. Elizabeth Dean did not attend. Acting superintendent Michael Koury also attended.
Kiwanis presented student of the month certificates for both September and October. The students get nominated by their teachers.
Avery Castro from Snell Middle School goes above and beyond to help keep the school clean. He never complains and always perseveres.
Samaiyah Vega from Snell Middle School works hard and tries to help other students without hesitation. She also has not had any absences this semester.
Candidate forum for Silver City town council district 3

On October 5, 2023, the candidate forum for the upcoming Silver City Town Council election in November took place at the Western New Mexico University Besse-Forward Resource Center. The forum had incumbent Jose Ray, Wendy Raven Phillips and Stan Snider facing off.
Nick Seibel, Silver City Daily Press publisher moderated the forum. The candidates received questions from the audience, Facebook, and the Press. Each would answer the same question and had two minutes.
Each candidate gave a three minute introduction.
