April 23, at 10 am, 3845 North Swan Street – “Through the Lens of Arturo Flores”
Javier Marrufo, Curator of the Silver City Museum, will talk about an exhibit which is currently on display at the Museum. It features Arturo Flores, a self-taught photographer who documented the Empire Zinc Mine Strike in Hanover, New Mexico.
Flores's photographs, captured in black and white, show the events from the perspective of an active participant rather than an outside observer. These photos are essential in understanding the conditions surrounding the Empire Zinc Mine Strike, a pivotal event in Grant County history. Marrufo will touch on the history of that strike, the importance of documenting your own personal experience, and the role of individual perspectives in history.
Javier Marrufo is the Curator of the Silver City Museum. A native of Silver City, New Mexico, he received a BA in History from Western New Mexico University in 2016, and will be completing his MA in History from the same institution in the fall of 2023.

Gila National Forest, Quemado Ranger District reopens Baca slash pit for public use

QUEMADO, NM, April 14, 2023 – The Gila National Forest, Quemado Ranger District has reopened Baca slash pit following burning of the debris starting in late March. “The Baca community slash pit is used all year long in partnership with the Catron County Firewise program – a program that helps remove hazardous fuels and vegetation on and adjacent to private lands,” said Quemado District Ranger, Randall Chavez.
An estimated 50,000 cubic feet of slash material (enough to fill a basketball court packed to the height of the baskets) was burned over the past couple of weeks on the 5-acre site northeast of Quemado, New Mexico. “The presence of a stable air mass made progress slow when the slash pit was initially ignited. As the week progressed, increased winds helped spread the fire through the target fuels and assisted with complete consumption,” said Dustin Roper, Quemado District Fire Management Officer and Burn Boss for the Baca Pit prescribed fire.
Ashes have cooled and the site is now safe for public entry and use for slash disposal. For more information contact Maribeth Pecotte at 575-388-8211 or Maribeth.Pecotte@usda.gov.
Gila National Forest urges visitors to use caution

Beware of high streamflow, persistent snow, and mud
SILVER CITY, NM, April 14, 2023 – The Gila National Forest urges the public to apply an abundance of caution when crossing streams and visiting high elevation areas of the forest as persistent snow continues to thaw.
The last low water crossing on New Mexico Highway 174 for access to the Catwalk National Recreation Area is notoriously challenging during high flow conditions. Flows that were already hazardously high during recent cool spring weather have increased with warmer temperatures that are accelerating snowmelt. High clearance, four-wheel drive vehicles are recommended, or visitors may park along the side of the road just before the crossing if water is too deep. The Gila River is also flowing higher and faster than normal for this time of year, making foot or horse crossings in the Gila Wilderness difficult or impossible.
“Streamflow is dynamic, with flows increasing as the daily temperature rises, and decreasing during cooler overnight hours,” said Gila National Forest Supervisor, Camille Howes.
