Treasurer Montoya Puts Companies on Investment Caution List in Response to Reports of Exploitation of Migrant Children

SANTA FE– New Mexico State Treasurer Laura M. Montoya has joined several state treasurers—as well as several other long-term shareholders—in a letter expressing serious concern regarding the recent New York Times investigative report by Hannah Dreier (the “New York Times Report”) that companies may be profiting from the use of U.S. suppliers that illegally employ underage migrant children. The letter highlights that such practices pose serious legal, regulatory, operational, and reputational risks to Companies and shareholder returns. The New York Times Report cited horrific stories that would amount to serious breaches and/or blind spots in Company controls and processes that are material to the Companies and their ability to meet investor expectations.
“Whether it’s the companies, or the entities they contract with, no one should take advantage of immigrant children or exploit their life circumstances and gain from the investment of taxpayer dollars,” said Treasurer Laura M. Montoya.

NMDOT insists drivers respect construction zone
LAS CRUCES - The New Mexico Department of Transportation District One office in cooperation with Mountain States Construction, Inc. (Contractor) will be micro surfacing on the US 70 frontage road from milepost 143 (I-10 /US 70 Interchange) to milepost 161 (Organ).
Micro Surfacing is an economical way to extend a roadway surface life before more serious deterioration occurs. It’s a low impact pavement preservation process that addresses surface raveling, minor rutting, and overall appearance.
Tomorrow Thursday, April 20, 2023, crews will begin micro surfacing treatments on the frontage road of US 70 (Bataan Memorial) working between Nasa Rd. going west to Porter Dr. During these operations motorists can expect single lane closures at a time, drivers may travel to the next intersection to turn around. The contractor’s hours of operation will be from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

NMSU announces NM Technology Student Association state conference winners

The New Mexico Technology Student Association, managed through New Mexico State University’s College of Engineering, is the state’s STEM career technical student organization. At this year’s hybrid NM TSA conference, held March 31 to April 1 at NMSU, more than 120 students from middle and high school chapters showcased their projects and practiced leadership skills through more than 35 different science, technology, engineering and math competitions. Cloudcroft High School was crowned as this year’s state champion.
Schools in attendance included Chaparral High School, Cliff High School, Cloudcroft Middle, Los Lunas High School, Newcomb High School, Pecos Cyber Academy, Santa Teresa High School, School of Dreams Academy and Volcano Vista High School.
“TSA is a wonderful career technical education program that provides students with opportunities for career-based learning that contributes to a skilled workforce in New Mexico,” said Clara Raley, NMSU STEM program manager and TSA state adviser.

DEMING – On Apr. 17, 2023, the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) and the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) came together to celebrate National Work Zone Awareness Week (NWZAW) April 17-21. This event was held to remind drivers to pay attention as they approach, drive through or past work zones so both motorists and roadway workers remain safe.

In the El Paso District in 2022, there were 944 traffic crashes in work zones, resulting in 4 fatalities and 14 serious injuries. In El Paso, there were 710 traffic crashes in work zones, resulting in no fatalities and 12 serious injuries.
N.M. Delegation Announces Over $9 Million For Schools, Roads, Emergency Response Services, And Forest Health Projects

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) and Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) and U.S. Representatives Teresa Leger Fernández (D-N.M.), Melanie Stansbury (D-N.M.), and Gabe Vasquez (D-N.M.) announced a total of $9,588,527 to support public schools, roads, emergency services on national forests and grasslands, and for developing community wildfire protection plans for New Mexico.
The funding comes from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Secure Rural Schools program. The Secure Rural Schools program provides critical funding for schools, roads, and other municipal services to more than 700 counties across the U.S. and Puerto Rico. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law reauthorized Secure Rural Schools through this fiscal year.
"Over two decades ago, Congress created the Secure Rural Schools program to help stabilize county budgets despite volatile revenues that historically came from timber on public lands," said Heinrich, Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Agriculture Subcommittee.

ETHICS ACT comes after over a year of collaboration and amid calls for government accountability
WASHINGTON – Most voters believe members of Congress shouldn’t be able to hold and trade individual stocks. But that hasn’t prevented members of Congress from doing it.
Before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, dozens of House and Senate members made over a thousand financial transactions after receiving closed-door briefings, according to the nonpartisan Campaign Legal Center. In 2022, members of Congress made more than 12,700 individual trades, with dozens of members profiting as Wall Street saw its worst year since 2008. A 2022 New York Times investigation reported a fifth of all lawmakers trading in companies directly related to their work on a congressional committee.
Governor declares state of emergency for Sandoval County

Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham on Tuesday signed an executive order declaring a state of emergency in Sandoval County due to flooding in the Jemez River corridor which affected the Village of Jemez Springs water treatment facility, the Jemez/Walatowa Pueblo, and the Village of San Ysidro.
The executive order makes $750,000 in state emergency funding available to assist Sandoval County with emergency measures, help prevent additional damage, repair public infrastructure, and lessen the overall recovery time related to flooding impacts.
The state Environment Department, Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, Department of Transportation, Department of Finance and Administration, and the governor’s office are coordinating with Sandoval County to ensure they have the resources necessary to protect public safety in the impacted area.
