An interview with Western New Mexico University President Joseph Shepard put into perspective some of the somewhat damning numbers brought up in a recent couple of articles from entities in other parts of New Mexico.
[Editor's Note: For background and this editor's editorial, which she wrote after reading the two articles, without knowing the context of a lot of its content, visit https://www.grantcountybeat.com/editorials/editorial/81591-unnecessary-spending-at-wnmu, as well as click on the two links that are at the end of the editorial.]
Shepard noted in his comments to the Beat that the "big numbers" pointed out in the articles, differ from the perspective of who is reading them. To a person in Grant County working hard to make $25,000 a year, spending that kind of money on travel seems totally improper.

District Attorney Michael R. Renteria announced that one of the co-defendants charged with the murder of 14-year-old Ashton Remondini of Deming has been sentenced to 28 years in prison. Michael Devon Moody, 18, pled guilty to first degree murder, conspiracy and robbery in Sixth Judicial District Court on December 5, 2023 before Judge Jennifer DeLaney.
According to Court records, the State alleged that on April 26, 2022, Moody, who was 16 at the time, and Rafael Camacho, who was 18, shot and stabbed Remondini in a remote area off Keeler Road, N.W., North of Deming. In a statement to law enforcement, Moody said he and Camacho convinced Remondini to go with them to shoot guns in the desert and that the pair planned to take Remondini’s gun from him and kill him.

The Grant County Commission Nov. 14, 2023 work session continued with the review of the regular meeting agenda, beginning with resolutions.
County Manager Charlene Webb said the first resolution addressed the need to amend R-23-62 to authorize an election for adoption of Municipal Fire Member Coverage Plan 4. "The first time we approved this resolution, we included only Tier 2 employees. PERA (Public Employees Retirement Association) wants us to include Tier 1 employees, although I think the chance of a Tier 1 employee being part of this is slim to none. This simply amends the one you already adopted but adding the Tier 1 language."

The annual Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots gifts handout took place on Saturday, Dec. 9. 2023, at the Santa Clara Armory.
The effort is led and organized each year by Robert and Danna Lopez of the Gaffney-Oglesby Marine Corps League Detachment 1328. With the help of a small army of volunteers, including Mr, and Mrs. Santa Claus, the event takes most of the year to plan and execute each December to make sure that Grant County children, who might otherwise not have had a very Merry Christmas, are not forgotten, thanks to the generosity of Grant County citizens.
Danna Lopez said preliminary numbers showed that more than 1800 children received gifts this year. The final numbers will come out in January.
