Registration Open for Nature Discovery Summer Camps

With support from the New Mexico Outdoor Equity Fund and the Lineberry Foundation, the Silver City Watershed Keepers is offering their second annual free Nature Discovery Summer Camp for rising 4th, 5th and 6th graders.
The summer camp is designed and delivered by professional educators to provide campers with a connection to nature and sense of place through discovery and exploration of the natural world, including native plants, insects, birds, fish, mammals, stream ecology, and watershed health. Campers will also learn about our cultural history through field trips to the Mimbres Cultural Heritage Site, the Gila River, and the Mimbres River. Activities include hiking, nature observation and journaling, art projects, water quality, and more!
Richard and La Jean Pieper to speak at Rotary Meeting

Richard and La Jean Pieper will speak to Rotary on April 11, 2023. Topic: “The Cokeville Elementary School Crisis.” Elder Pieper explained that “on May 18, 1986, the former town Marshall, David Young, having been fired seven years earlier, returned to Cokeville, Wy. and took the entire elementary school hostage.” The Piepers will tell about the lessons learned by the community, the school and the individuals involved, as they were there on this historic occasion.
The meeting will be held at Wranglers, 2005 US-180, from 12-1 p.m.
Rotary is an organization of business and professional persons united worldwide to provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world.

PUBLIC NOTICE
The Mayor of the Town of Silver City is accepting applications for one (1) volunteer position for District 1 Councilor. Applicants for this positionshall reside within District 1 of the Town of Silver City. The term is for the remainder of the four-year term ending in December 2023. The Town Council meets on the second and fourth Tuesday every month at 6:00 P.M. and holds special meetingsas needed. Applications will be accepted until 5:00 P.M., on April 28, 2023.
Successful applicants will be interviewed by the Mayor and each Council Member individually at the City Annex located at 1203 N. Hudson,
Silver City, NM the first week of May. The appointment for CouncilorDistrict 1 will be made at the Regular Council Meeting on May 9, 2023.
All applicants must submit a Resume, a letter of intent stating why you have an interest to serve as a Councilor in District 1, as well as indicate your goals or what you wish to accomplish while in office. Guest Presenter: Lee Gruber and Abrianna Gamez - Co-starters is an entrepreneurial program that helps new businesses. 65 people have gone through this program since 2020. Priscilla Lucero and Eric brought in an EDA grant for the program. We were the first ones in the state.

Pick It Up-Toss No Mas invites the community to celebrate Earth Day week by volunteering to remove litter in our community and waterways. During the month of April, people from all over the world are coming together to collectively address the climate crisis and work towards creating a healthy future for everyone. We need volunteers like you to help collectively reduce litter in our community and keep Silver City clean and beautiful! Volunteer to team up to clean up our community!
Pick It Up-Toss No Mas is proud to partner with Gila Earth Day for our upcoming cleanup to be held Saturday, April 15 9 AM-12 PM at Gough Park parking lot in Silver City, New Mexico.
Meet the Pick It Up – Toss No Mas team in the Gough Park parking lot and grab supplies, including trash bags, gloves, trash pickers, snacks, and free t-shirts. Return to Gough Park parking lot between 11 am and noon to drop off collected trash and recyclables and record your cleanup results that will qualify you for prizes.

The Gila Film School: Capturing Fresh Wilderness Views

Wednesday, April 5, noon to 1 p.m., Western Institute of Lifelong Learning (WILL) presents its first spring of '23 Lunch and Learn. WILL invites the public to the free presentation at the ABC room of the Besse Forward Global Resource Center, W. 12th and Kentucky Streets.
Simon Sotelo III, community organizer and film producer for the Gila Field School, presents the work of the school that resulted from coordination between the creative media institute of New Mexico State University (NMSU) and the National Forest Service.
Sotelo will show a completed video as well as trailers produced by 13 students who explored the Gila Wilderness for 10 days in August, 2022.
